Katrien Beeckman graduated as a midwife and obtained a Masters’ degree in the Social Health Sciences. She started her career as midwife at the Onze Lieve Vrouw hospital (Asse, Belgium). Later on, she combined her clinical work with a job as researcher in the domain of perinatal health (care) at the Arteveldehogeschool (Gent). Early 2005, she became research assistant in the Department of Medical Sociology and Health Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She finished a PhD on antenatal care in Brussels, determinants of care trajectories (2011).
Currently she works at the University hospital in Brussels (UZ Brussel) where she co-ordinates nursing and midwifery research, she is research professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and docent in the midwifery program at the Erasmus University college Brussel. While antenatal care and social vulnerability are central themes, the common focus within the research projects is the organizational aspect of care delivery.
